March 16 Viruses Posing as E-mail From Western Idaho Internet

There is a virus currently going around that is posing as being Western Idaho Internet Support. It has several different forms. Usually it says that your service will be interrupted and you should run the attachment to prevent it. The attachment is a virus. Normally this attachment is a .zip file. If the file is not password protected we can block it, as we have been since March 3rd around noon. If it is encrypted and password protected we can not detect it and it may get through. DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT.

For more information on this virus visit the Symantec Security Response site.

A removal tool is available from Symantec here.

If you believe you have already been infected please download the removal tool and follow the instructions on the download page. Thank You.

Sept 30  More reasons to keep your Computer updates current..

Hackers are hijacking AOL instant-messenger accounts and changing PCs' dial-up settings through a hole in Microsoft's Internet explorer

Another attack is being accomplished by sending computer users to Web sites -- typically porn sites -- that change the computer's dial-up settings to an expensive long-distance phone number without the user knowing it.  (See the May tip for a program that will help scan for and remove these dialers)

Sept 20 A worm, variously known as I-Worm.Swen, W32/Swen.A@mm or W32/Gibe@MM.e, has the potential to spread quickly because it is well-disguised as a security update from Microsoft. It takes advantage of a two-year-old Internet Explorer flaw that allows it to execute directly from an e-mail message without the help of the user.  If you receive this message DELETE IT.  Do NOT open or download anything from this message!  Microsoft does NOT send email warnings to the general public.
