Getting rid of Windows Messenger Popup ads

This tip describes how to prevent Windows Messenger from running.

By default, Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition install Windows Messenger, and the user interface does not provide a way to remove or to uninstall Windows Messenger.

This Link will take you to Microsoft's removal instructions if you want to completely stop Windows Messenger from running on your computer.

NOTE: The following procedure does not prevent users from manually running Windows Messenger, but it does prevent Windows Messenger from running automatically each time that you start Windows.

  1. Start Windows Messenger.
  2. Click Tools select Options the  menu.
  3. Click the Preferences tab, UN-check  the Run this program when Windows starts check box, and then click OK.

If you use Outlook Express or Outlook XP, Windows Messenger may start automatically each time you run Outlook Express or Outlook. To prevent Windows Messenger from signing in when you run Outlook Express:

  1. In Outlook Express, click Tools select Options on the  menu.
  2. Click the General tab.  UN-check the Automatically log on to Windows Messenger check box.
  3. Click OK.
